When we hear the word microbes, we tend to think of diseases and risks.

But that wouldn’t be fair to the friendly microbes.

 

You see, microbes are everywhere, in your body, on your body, and around your body.

You might actually be surprised to learn that your microbes actually outnumber your own cells.

“The current estimate is that humans have 10 trillion human cells and about 100 trillion bacterial cells,” says Dr. Martin J. Blaser at the New York University School of Medicine.

 

And while some of them may be very dangerous to our health (we’ll tell you about them in a second) most of those 100 trillion are harmless. They’re kind of the good guys who wish you well, are relentless hard workers, and just love to do things right.

 

One of the most important things good microbes do for you are:

-Keeping you slim by supporting your food digestion and producing chemicals that shape your metabolic rates.

-Boosting your immune system by protecting you against infections and stimulating immunity-cells reproduction that can even help the body fight cancerous tumors.

-Fighting off stress: according to a recent scientific, people feeling intense stress have much less diverse bacterial communities in the gut, suggesting that there is an interplay between microbes and stress responses.

-Maintaining your reproductive health and fertility and offering a hospitable supportive environment to a newly conceived child

 

While this may sound very reassuring (and it is), you still have to pay very careful attention to the dangerous ones, the bacteria, viruses, and fungus that could be nesting on your furniture, on your phone’s screen, in your kitchen sink, on the countertops, and even in the air. They lurk in the shadows waiting for an opportunity to get to you, and to feed on your body.

 

So it is your responsibility to protect the good friendly microbes while protecting yourself from the microbes that compromise your health and put your life at risk.
